Sections of the Brain (Summary)

  • The cortex is divided into right and left cerebral hemispheres, each of which is divided into four lobes:
    • Frontal
    • Temporal
    • Parietal
    • Occipital
  • There has been major debate about whether functions are localised in different cortical areas (modular) or whether they are distributed
  • Primary motor and sensory areas have been located in different lobes, each of which has an association area linked with it.
  • Planning, decision-making and some aspects of language are the responsibility of the frontal lobes. Memory, emotionality and other aspects of languages are dealt with by the temporal lobes
  • Some areas of the cortex are specialised for particular functions, but localisation is not very precise. Any one function may involve separate areas.
